Samsung Announces the Galaxy S5

Samsung has announced its latest flagship in the line of Galaxy S devices, the Galaxy S5. From the onset, you will notice that not much has changed in terms of the look and design of the GS5 (you can still spot the Galaxy product a mile away), but there’s a lot more that has changed below the surface, for both the hardware and software departments.

Even before today’s event, Samsung teased its new TouchWiz UI, which sports a more vanilla Android feel over the previously heavy-laden, S-branded apps. Samsung has added a few additional features including a fingerprint scanner and heart-rate sensor atop of the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. This is no surprise though, as it was announced a few weeks ago that Samsung had met with Google to provide a more pure Android experience going forward. One of the remaining S-branded apps is the S-health app, which, with the added heart-rate sensor, makes for a more complete monitoring app.

In terms of its hardware, the screen has been bumped up to a slightly bigger, 5.1” screen with the same 1080p Super AMOLED display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Unfortunately, this is not the 2160p display that had been rumours a few days leading up to the event.

Despite this, the device still packs quite a punch, sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 CPU, IP67 water and dust proof certification, 16MP, 4640x3480px rear camera, 2GB RAM, 150Mbps LTE (Cat4) connectivity, and 2800mAh battery. The 16MP camera with 0.3s autofocus, shallow DoF effect mode, HDR real-time processing, and Ultra HD video recording, but only at 30fps, as well as 1080p recording at 60fps.

The GS5 also supports microSD storage up to 128GB, has options of 16 and 32GB internal storage. While the design may look quite similar to the GS4, the GS5 features a swappable rear cover, including faux leather, to make things a bit more interesting in that department. Again, Samsung have stuck with the plastic build, although it more closely resembles the sleeker-looking Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was announced alongside the Gear 2, Neo and Fit, which will all be available from 11th April 2014 in over 150 countries.
