Animal lovers can rejoice now that Ananas Anam has developed Piñatex™, a durable non-woven leather made from pineapple leaves.
Seven years of research has resulted in producing this textile from plant fibers. Originating from the Philippines, the research was continued in Spain and the UK. Seeing as it is made from the plant waste, no other resources are used, thus, consumers can rest assure that no additional land, water or fertilizers were wasted. It is simply a by-product of the harvest – yeah green!
Fashion lovers are thrilled as the durability of this textile is far more user-friendly and durable than the plastic alternative that has been used to date. With the high-demand of leather, Piñatex truly comes as a blessing. Leading brands like Puma and Camper are already sporting it in their new lines. It is used for all the traditional uses such as clothes, shoes, handbags, upholstery, car interior and accessories.
It is said to be “strong, versatile, breathable, soft, light, flexible, and can be easily printed on, stitched and cut.” Piñatex is in accordance with the ISO international standard. And what’s more, Piñatex prides itself on being both environmentally and socially conscious, making sure that it remains at a low cost – a sure relief for consumers.
This “vegan leather” will definitely prove to be a major game changer!
