SanDisk has long since been synonymous with storage media, more specifically flash memory and readers. SanDisk’s Extreme® Solid State Drive is one such product. Launched a few short weeks ago, this SSD offers cutting edge architecture, reaching extreme transfer speeds.

SanDisk Extreme SSD - Drive

There’s no beating around the bush, SSDs are designed for speed. The Extreme is capable of sequential read speeds of up to 550MB per second. Considering that average PC hard-drives have read speeds of 50MB per second, and most other SSDs around 400MB per second, these speeds impressive to say the least. File transfer rates (write) aren’t too bad either at around 510MB per second.

When using a standard hard-drive on fairly aged PC (3-4 years), installation of Windows 8 OS will take 30-50 minutes depending on the setup. Swap out only the hard-drive for the SanDisk Extreme SSD, the installation time is halved, with most of the time spent copying files from the installation disk. Looking at the boot-up time of the said PC, a time of 2-3 minutes is observed with the same OS. Compare the time with the same SSD and boot-up time drops to an average of 20 seconds. Such times are generally witnessed on Ultrabooks, gaming PCs and the likes.

For more advanced setups, users will appreciate a number of additional features of the SanDisk Extreme SSD. There are no moving parts, making it both quiet and less prone to wear and tear, and withstand greater shock and vibrations of standard drives. In addition, this SSD has minimal operating power usage, which assists greatly when trying to keep internal temperatures of your PC as low as possible.

The SanDisk Extreme SSD is available in storage capacities of 120GB, 240GB and 480GB, with recommended retail costs of R999, R1949 and R3799 (all excluding VAT), respectively. If you consider the dramatic improvement to any setup, all with the simple addition of the Extreme SSD, there aren’t any negative aspects to deliberate over, even the cost. The SanDisk Extreme SSD is one of the fastest SSDs currently available, and one of the more affordable in the same category.
