Logitech is synonymous for its PC peripherals, speakers and other audio accessories. Although most of the focus revolves around their high-end, surround sound speakers, Logitech has a good number of stereo speakers in their range. This time around, they’ve introduced the z120, a set of portable, USB-powered, stereo speakers.

Logitech z120 - Box

As with all Logitech products, you are almost always assured of quality in design and build. The z120 aren’t any different. Although they’re made of solid plastic, their design is pleasing, with an exposed front of the speakers. The speakers are small enough to fit around your laptop/PC, and can even be carried around in your backpack and a few laptop bags. Since these are portable speakers, they were designed to be used on laptops, and other USB-enabled devices, the cables aren’t all that long. This means that you will most likely not be able to connect these speakers to the back of your desktop placed on the ground, while placing the speakers above your desk.

In terms of its technical features, the z120 stereo speakers produce a total power output of 1.2W and are powered by USB. Because of this, you would generally assume that the power consumed via USB would dramatically decrease the battery life when using an unplugged laptop, but in the long run, there is not that big of a difference in battery usage when connecting these speakers.

The audio quality produced by the speakers is good, but become worse as the volume is increased. Once the volume on the speakers is raise a bit above half way, you will start to pick up some distortion, and is clearly audible when your music/movies are paused. Still, the quality of audio produced is a whole lot better than what you will find on most laptops, which is why you’d want to buy these portable speakers in the first place.

Logitech z120 - Angles

In terms of the cost, the Logitech z120 stereo speakers are quite inexpensive, costing on average around R160. Since the speakers are USB-powered, and designed for laptops, you will find it difficult for use on your desktop, and also laptops with limited USB ports. There are a number of variants when comes to portable stereo speakers, quite a few around the R100 mark, which is quite a big saving. All things considered, with Logitech’s build quality, design, and better-than-most audio quality, if I was in the market for portable speakers, I know where I’d put my money.
