It’s interesting how many bands there are in the world that may have been going for decades, have released tens of albums, and are yet largely unknown to the general public when mentioned. It is however, largely more understandable in the dancehall electronic music world, which can inspire devotion and fandom like few others, and is yet largely excluded from the mainstream. Well, if you wanted a definitive sampling of one of the biggest of these types of bands, you could do much worse than with this live collection of some of New Order’s greatest hits.

New Order have survived multiple periods of break ups and band restructuring, and are still going strong to perform multiple charity shows to huge audiences, of which this album is a recording of one of those shows. The live factor comes into play in a few nice ways, and the impact of it being a huge show is felt that it does make the tracks more distinct than if they were off a studio album.
This is an interesting collection of songs, and allows the listener to skim over the long history of the band, perhaps not understanding their development as such, but at least understanding their depth of quality that leads them to have lasted for so long in the industry. Sadly though, as the album itself reveals for fans, they have had few big songs for the last 20 years even, and the overall effect is to seem as though they are coasting off of past glories for the most part.

If you are a longtime fan or a newcomer to this band, however, you can do far worse than to pick up this album, which is fun, exciting, quality styled dance music by a group of British veterans. And the money goes to help charities, so that’s something.
