Story: Batman is an underground vigilante, trying to stamp out Gotham’s most dangerous criminals. His mission is compromised by Gotham’s police force, which sees him as a menace that attracts all sorts of criminal freaks.
Like Geoff John’s ‘Justice League’ this story also takes place five years in the past and Batman has been running around Gotham, fighting crime and evading officials for the same length of time. Batman is only making his acquaintance with the Joker but becomes involved in his arch-nemesis’ criminal underworld, which is as bloody as its villains are insane.
Daniel really emphasizes the detective elements and plays heavily on the noir aspects of the story. It is gritty, bleak and full of action. The Joker is as compelling as ever and the introduction of the Dollmaker makes the plot all-the-more intriguing. Superb artwork does the story justice and the opening spread is a feast for the eyes. This is a well written, well drawn first release that successfully reboots the franchise.
