Have you ever looked at your phones emoticons and thought, “hey, these are racist!”? Oju Africa is a division of African mobile manufacturer, Mi-Fone, have heard your cries. After Apple recently come under the microscope for its set of Emojis which lacked cultural diversity, Oju Africa set out to create “afro” emoticons in response.
According to the report, the emoticons have been designed for use on Android platforms, and will be available on IOS after its official release.
“We had a dream of digitally uniting Africa, liberating Africans from digital exclusion. And with the launch of the Oju Africa Afro Emoticons we are sharing African soul, funk and unparalleled smiles with the world,” said Alpesh Patel, CEO of Oju Africa. “The launch of our Oju Emoticons has come at an ideal time where celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Tahj Mowry are also becoming increasing vocal about the need for a more diverse range of emoticons. They have even gone as far as approaching Apple with this request, yet what people don’t realise is that there is no need for anyone else to develop these when we have them available right now.”
And there you have it. Now you can be politically correct when sending off a smiley to a friend. The days of the racist yellow smileys are over!
