Late last week we got a look at a new poster showing the film’s leads, now STX Entertainment has debuted the new trailer for Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and it looks amazing.

“This missions is a simple in and out” a voice says over a familiar looking red planet. “Agent Valerian, you’ll be running solo.”

“I only work with my partner,” Valerian interjects. Laureline responds with a smile, “hi!”

“We’re a team,” Valerian continues before we’re thrown back into the heat of the action where a Star Wars or Star Trek like creature attacks. It’s all remarkably familiar.

We’ve heard quite a bit of The Beatles’ music in trailers this last week. First, we had Come Together in the Justice League trailer and now we’ve got Because in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The new trailer gives us a look at some of the magnificent worlds and creatures Valerian and Laureline encounter in the film. Could this be the next Star Wars franchise?

Based on the beloved Valerian and Laureline French graphic novels, considered ancestors of Star Wars and Avatar, Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as the duo of time-traveling agents named Valerian and Laureline who go on various adventures throughout the galaxy together. Written and directed by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Professional, The Fifth Element, and Lucy) and produced by Virginie Besson-Silla, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu.

Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
