Netflix has been doing a lot of sci-fi thrillers lately. Bright, Altered Carbon and The Cloverfield Paradox are just a few. Here is another. Directed by longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe animatics artist Federico D’Allessandro in his first feature film, Tau stars Ed Skrein, Maika Monroe and Gary Oldman voicing the AI.

Before you turn away, Tau actually looks promising. I know, I know, we said the same thing about Netflix’s other experiments in the genre. But this might be different.

Saw meets HAL in this smart house horror film. A young woman living in a futuristic city gets kidnapped by a mysterious stranger. She wakes up strapped to a chair in a strange house run by AI. The stranger gives her a choice: do as he says or the house will kill her.

That’s not the worst synopsis for a sci-fi thriller. In fact, it reminds us a lot of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Tau hits Netflix on June 29.
