The Truth About Emanuel is a strangely enchanting story of two women and their unresolved issues with loss.

Emanuel

Emanuel who is played by Kaya Scodelario, lives in a world of her own and we’re invited in. Soon after, the viewer is drawn into her world and we join her as she is invited into the equally troubled world of her new neighbour, Linda, played by Jessica Biel.

The two women share a secret, a bond and a longing. Their relationship is one that fills the gaps of their recent loss. The two leads force viewers to share their sadness however strange their actions and connection may be. As Emanuel assumes a role of protector for Linda and what she is hiding, the audience might find themselves rooting for her. Scodelario achieves this with her character’s internal consistency.

Director Francesca Gregorini does well to use technical elements to enhance the story. The lighting and camera angles used throughout the movie allow for the eeriness and sadness to be intensified.

The film asks that we watch both women make their way towards closure and confronting the very issue that brought them together. While the movie fails to entertain, it does move the viewer to feel, to ask and to understand.
