Have you ever wondered, “Is this a relationship or it just friends with benefits?” Well, according to single stud Jason (Zac Efron), that wondering thought leads up to ‘That Awkward Moment’.

Jason starts the film by enlightening us on “that awkward moment” – when a girl starts by saying “So…” just before she drops the question “Where is this relationship going?” He makes it very clear that at that point of danger it’s time to grab whatever you own and run for the hills before the relationship proceeds to the next level.

Tom Gormican’s directorial debut, That Awkward Moment, is a lightweight bromance date movie that centers around three male friends that have made a pact to stay free and single. With Jason as the alpha dog, Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) as the straight up Mr. Nice Guy and Daniel (Miles Teller) as the comedic side kick, this bunch of friends seem to be having the time of their lives – partying, heavy drinking, periodic casual flings that end when “That Awkward Moment” comes ups and the cycle continues. But things skyrocket when Jason falls for the blue-eyed blonde bombshell Ellie (Imogen Poots), Daniel gets serious with his secret lover Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) and poor Micky’s wife Vera (Jessica Lucas) shocks him by demanding a divorce because they haven’t had action in the bedroom in months.

New York City provides the perfect setting for this romantic comedy – pretty gardens, lavish apartments, and busy streets make the film pleasant to watch. Tom Gormican needs to go back to the drawing board because the film has a lot of comedic elements in it but desperately falls short in the details. The blend between comedy and romance creates holes in the plot and fails in logic. But, as far as undemanding romantic comedies go, this film is enjoyable and recommended to anyone that likes a bromance buddy film and heart-on-the sleeve love stuff.
