Revenge is a dish served bland in the empowering and tolerable thriller Return to Sender, a morsel of violence and a few unexpected twists. Fresh off her breakthrough role in the edgy Gone Girl, the talented Rosamund Pike returns to strike fear into the hearts of sinful men yet again. Unfortunately, this B-movie feels more like leftovers than fine dining.

Return to Sender - Film Review

Pike plays pretty and perfect Miranda, a caring and overachieving nurse about to buy a new home. When she endures a sexual assault, her life plans are set offtrack. Her loving dad (Nick Nolte) tries to come to her aid, but the trauma has left her scarred. She is unable to return to normalcy and Miranda willfully begins to engage with her rapist (Shiloh Fernandez). As you can expect, things aren’t exactly as they seem. There is a calculated undercurrent that Miranda’s icy blonde exterior just can’t hide.

Return to Sender - Movie Review

Tapping into her dark side again, Rosamund Pike might make Return to Sender digestible to some, but you can’t help but feel that her talents are wasted here. Having seen Gone Girl, this film feels awfully average and unconvincing in comparison. It’s really a rough draft of her award winning film. It all plays out like “I Spit on Your Grave” meets “Nurse Betty”.

Average.
