This past Saturday, 30th May 2015, saw the last qualifying round for South Africa’s Mortal Kombat X Cup. This been the second round of qualifying for Gauteng, the event also spanned the Western Cape and Kwazulu-Natal regions earlier in May. The event was hosted at Internet Solutions, at The Campus in Bryanston, Johannesburg, with Ster-Kinekor and Razer amongst the sponsors for the Cup event. With a number of hopeful competitors having made the journey across Gauteng to show off their skills, only a few would make it out of the qualifying round. Given the level of experience, there weren’t many straightforward wins on the day.
It was good to see a fair mix of entrants on the day, with even a few ladies making an appearance, most in supporting roles, but a few gamers as well. The event now moves on from the qualifying rounds, and is soon to crown the first MKX champion in SA. eSports has made its mark in the country, now recognised as an official sport. In addition to be crowned SA champ, the winner is expected to compete on the global stage representing their country. Be sure to keep an eye out for news on the finals, as spectators and fans are more than welcome to attend these events.
