LG Announces the ‘Self-Repairing’ G Flex

Written by

Less than a month after Samsung officially announced their Galaxy Round ‘flexi-screened’ smartphone, LG have now officially announced their version of the flexible smartphone, the G Flex. As with the Galaxy Round, LG did not have any luck in terms of keeping the device, and its specs, mute to the public. In truth, almost all aspects of the new device had been previously leaked, apart from one, quite unique feature.

Unlike the Galaxy Round with its horizontally curved screen, the G Flex is vertically curved (similar to the Galaxy Nexus a few years back). This was allegedly designed to fit the curvature of your face, as opposed to the curvature of your pocket. The 6” curved screen sports an OLED display with 720p (720x1280px) resolution, at 245ppi. The device weighs in on the heavier side at 177g (even heavier than the Note 3), with dimensions of 160.5×81.6×8.7mm. Under the hood you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.26GHz CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 13MP rear-facing camera, and impressive 3500mAh battery. As with some of the latest LG smartphones on the market, the G Flex also includes a two-button rear control buttons for the camera. The G Flex also comes with a slew of LG apps atop Android 4.2.2, including the tap-to-wake features.

Now to something a little different. LG has included a ‘self-healing’ coating to the rear of the G Flex. The smartphone, as they report, will be fully capable of repairing hairline scratches within a few minutes all on its own. In a more tongue and cheek approach, LG officials compared the feature to that of the self-healing abilities of the Wolverine, from the X-Men. The G Flex will be available from next month in Korea, but there are no immediate plans to roll out on a global scale. We assume, then, as with the Galaxy Round, that the smartphone may just be the first official prototype of a more detailed flexible screened smartphone to be released soon.
