Suicide Squad arrives in theaters this week, but Warner Bros.’ latest summer tentpole has already debuted to a lot of poor reviews. It seems that studio interference might be the main cause of a lot of the issues pointed out by critics again. Now Jared Leto who plays The Joker in Suicide Squad has come forward and mentioned that many of his scenes were cut from the movie.
THR reports that Warner Bros. brought in multiple editors (uncredited in the final version of the film) to piece together a “lighter, studio-favored version” that was shown to test audiences alongside director David Ayer’s “more somber version.” It’s not the first time this happened. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffered with the very same problems.
Some of the footage removed from the final edit includes scenes with Jared Leto’s Joker.
“Oh, there are a lot of scenes,” Leto responded when asked if there was a scene that didn’t make it into the final cut. “Yeah, there are a lot of scenes that didn’t make it to the final film. Hopefully they’ll see the light of day. Who knows,” Leto told Telestar. “I learned a lot about the Joker the more that I worked on the character, and I think that’s probably going to continue to happen.”
Fans are outraged with critics, with many sighting that Marvel films get higher ratings versus DC films that get over scrutinized. A petition calling for the shutdown of the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes has 17,000 signatures from viewers upset with Suicide Squad’s poor ratings. However, if Suicide Squad doesn’t land with viewers, Wonder Woman will be hailed as DC’s next great hope.
Suicide Squad has an August 5, 2016 release date directed by David Ayer starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and Scott Eastwood in an unknown role.
