With Pokémon currently on everybody’s mind (TV, Radio’s the whole internet) thanks to Pokémon GO, it seems Legendary Pictures want’s a slice of the Pokémon pie as they have successfully acquired the film rights for Pokémon.
Legendary will be partnering up with The Pokémon Company in order to develop a live-action Pokémon film franchise starting with a Detective Pikachu movie. Not much has been revealed beyond this, although Legendary has indicated that they will be fast-tracking production to start in 2017. Universal will be distributing the film internationally with Toho pictures doing the distribution in Japan. There were rumors that Netflix was also interested in acquiring the rights.
Detective Pikachu sees everybody’s favorite yellow mouse joining forces with a boy named Tim in order to find his missing father. Legendary hasn’t indicated if the movie will follow the same storyline as the game. Although there have been spin-off animated Pokémon movies this will be the first time that we will see a live-action Pokémon movie.
Being a Pokémon fan myself I am excited to see live-action versions of my favorite Pokémon coming to the big screen, I’m just not sure if Detective Pikachu is a great place to start a live-action Pokémon franchise.
