It looks like a Painkiller Jane movie is finally back up and running. Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain has come aboard to star in and produce a new Painkiller Jane movie for Lotus Entertainment and Solipsist Films. Painkiller Jane will mark Jessica Chastain’s first ever comic book/graphic novel adaptation.
With the success of Marvel’s Avengers films and Warner Bros.’ recent Justice League endeavors, more studios are looking to get into the superhero game. Painkiller Jane, the comic from the creative team of Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti of Event Comics is finally getting the big screen treatment.
Jane Vasko begins as an undercover police officer attempting to infiltrate the Fonti Mob. After gaining the trust of mob boss Joey Fonti, she is given the assignment of passing a message on to rival gang member Adam, not realizing that an explosive device has been planted on her. As she meets her target, the explosion causes significant injuries, but Adam is uninjured. Through mysterious means, he manages to revive Jane, giving her superhuman regenerative powers in the process. Leaving her life as a police officer behind, she becomes the vigilante Painkiller Jane.
Originally a five-issue mini-series, the character went on to star in numerous crossover titles with the likes of the Punisher, Vampirella, and Hellboy. Recently, the series relaunched at Dynamite Entertainment with the first issue selling out.
It’s not the first time the character has made it onto screen though. Syfy released a Painkiller Jane telefilm in 2005 with Emmanuelle Vaugier in the title role. Two years later, the property was rebooted into a short lived tv series starring Kristanna Loken.
