At the beginning of the year, Hasbro announced their new crowdsourcing campaign, called HasLab, aimed at helping to bring large and detailed collectables to fans. The campaign’s first project reached it’s funding earlier this week, meaning that Jabba the Hutt’s Sail Barge (the largest Hasbro collectable yet) will soon be a reality.
HasLab allows collectors to back specific projects. Once these projects receive 5000 backers or more, the proposed collectable goes into production. The first of these collectable to successfully be backed is The Jabba the Hutt’s Sail Barge collectable from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This replica of Jabba’s luxury barge doesn’t come cheap though as it costs a massive $500. The replica barge will measure around 122 centimetres long, 36 centimetres wide and 42 centimetres deep. Now to give you an idea of its size, the collectable will weigh approximately 6.4 kilograms, which is rather on the heavy side. This makes the replica barge the largest Hasbro branded Star Wars toy ever made.
Not only is the barge big and weighty, but it is also highly detailed and features a cockpit, galley, armoury, and lounge that can accommodate 9.5 centimetres figures (3.75-inch). Of course, the barge includes a figure of Jabba himself, as well as Yak Face. It’s not clear if the product will ever make it to retail, especially since the company reported lacklustre sales of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi toy lines.
It’s great to see Hasbro taking the initiative with the HasLab campaign. Not only is this a great way of making more collectables available to fans, but it also means that fans have a say in deciding which product gets produced.
