Google Movies launched in South Africa

Good news South Africa! You are now able to buy and rent movies from the Google Play store.

Following the recent launch of Netflix on our shores, search giant Google has announced that Google Play Movies is now available in RSA, only months after launching its music offering locally. Movies are available to buy or rent from Google’s online store, which is accessible from smartphones or the web. Rentals are priced from R11.99 to R34.99, while purchases cost between R89.99 to R149.99 (basically the price of a DVD).

Other African countries that now have access to Google Play Movies include Angola, Botswana, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, this only obtains to movies. TV series are currently only available to users in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US.

“Our goal with Google Play is to bring together all your favourite content in one place that you can access across your devices,” Google SA communications and public affairs head Mich Atagana said. “Once the movie is rented, you will have 30 days to watch most movies and 48 hours to finish watching once you have hit the ‘play’ button.”

He also went on to clarify that “Google Play is not just for Android.”
