Throughout 2022, we were inundated with endless rumours about the mythical Nintendo Switch Pro. It was slated to be a big improvement over the original Nintendo Switch and its OLED upgrade a few years later. However, with the release of the Steam Deck and the imminent release of many other handheld entries into the market, the development work on the Switch Pro was abruptly ended. The reason was simple enough in that it couldn’t match the hardware specifications and performances of the competition, most notably that of 4K gaming. With the Pro firmly put to bed in January this year, rumours quickly began to surface of the revival of the next major Nintendo release – the Nintendo Switch 2.

Despite various tech industry concerns, decreased sales in certain areas and delays for big releases, there is one consistent in the market that has held it together even through the worst of the COVID pandemic. The gaming sector continues to boom across all the industries it touches. This is especially true when it comes to gaming technologies, including sales of consoles, gaming peripherals and gaming laptops. There are loyal fans across the board for each specific brand, allowing manufacturers to push for improved developments.
Nintendo has had some of the strongest support throughout its many decades as a manufacturer and gaming developer house. The team have produced some of the gaming community’s best classics, led by the dashing Link from the Legend of Zelda franchise. This was again confirmed with its latest Tears of the Kingdom release. As we push towards the Christmas period – yes, we’re already seeing the marketing on the shelves across malls – many big announcements and releases are expected during this time. With plenty of games on the horizon as well, seeing the words “Launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC” are to be expected almost across the board. Adding the Nintendo Switch 2 to this group of top-tier gaming consoles would be great news to Nintendo fans, enthusiasts and gamers looking for the ultimate portable experience.
Given the extremely bad response recently to the $70 Mortal Kombat 1 port for the Nintendo Switch, most fans will be in agreement in wishing that the Switch 2 would not fall into the same perils. The game was comically ported and quickly became the laughingstock of the gaming industry. And the criticisms weren’t unwarranted, especially given the high price point, matching those of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
So, with the hints of a much-improved Nintendo Switch 2 on the cards, what can we expect from the next-generation mobile console? It may be a bit of a stretch to expect it to compete in hardware specifications against the PlayStation and Xbox consoles but to be on par (or close to) its graphical offering with games that don’t look as if they’ve popped out from the early 2000s, it can only bode well for the Japanese gaming brand.
