SuperHot is an interesting FPS game. It takes all the elements you would like in FPS games, such as shooting and killing the bad guys, but puts you the player in control of when the game moves. In other words: You move and the rest of the world moves with you.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n SuperHot you are a person sitting in front of your PC with a DOS prompt. You can play games and even run apps. Then your friend sends you a message about this great new game called Superhot.exe. The only way you can access this game is with a crack. So he sends you the files to enable you to play the game. You engage some enemies on several levels with the words “Super Hot” playing on repeat every time you complete a level. You encounter glitches and disconnects, etc. and you realize that you are actually playing a game inside a game.

The main game mechanic is based around the idea that when you move time starts moving and when you stop it stops. This mechanic makes for some very interesting level design and puzzles. Dodging bullets can be easy, but grabbing objects from enemies and even throwing objects can be difficult if you don’t plan ahead. Figuring out how items, bullets, and enemies will move is critical if you want to clear a level. SuperHot might sound easy to play, but thanks to the time control mechanic, the game is both fun and challenging.

The game’s art direction uses very low polygon elements and a limited color pallet to accentuate its striking visuals. Don’t let the basic looks fool you though there is a reason behind the simplistic visuals. By having this basic yet striking visual style the game helps keep your attention focused where it matters. It has four main colors: White, red, Black and grey. Enemies are red so you can spot them in the game and when you manage to kill them, they shatter into pieces like they are made out of glass. It tends to be on the short side. If you had to sit for around 2 – 4 hours, you would easily complete the main campaign. Once you have completed it, you unlock challenges and an endless mode. This helps add to the replay value of the game. There are some really cool little fun things and easter eggs to discover in the DOS prompt if you fiddle around enough. For instance, you can watch a whole conversation between a chat group, and some of the comments even tend to be really funny. The game even pokes fun at PC Master Race vs Console Gamers.

If you are looking for something different and enjoy indie games, then I would highly recommend this game. It can be frustrating at times, but there is lots of fun to be had. The unique time manipulation mechanics, interesting puzzles and all out action makes SuperHot a game you should definitely check out.
