I courageously stepped out of my comfort zone to attend the Press Conference for the re-crowning of Miss South Africa 2014. Following Ronelle Strauss’ incredible success at Miss World 2014, pageant rules stipulate that a new heir to the Miss South Africa throne be named. 23 year old Ziphozakhe Zokufa was modeling in Hong Kong when she heard the news.
Supported by the Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, the Miss South Africa pageant is all about the empowerment of women. Focusing on talent while affording young girls the opportunity to step out and make a difference, the pageant aims to add substance to the concept of beauty. “My concept of beauty is diplomatic,” states the Minister “every woman is beautiful”
Could he be right? I pondered this as the flawless Ziphozakhe stepped out to address the media for first time, as Miss South Africa 2014. Wearing a crown made of platinum and a sash declaring her new role, a nervous yet confident Ziphozakhe spoke of how she was happy to accept the responsibilities, as she believes that all “opportunities should be taken.” She quotes Nelson Mandela, thanks her parents, sponsors and supporters, then awards us a few minutes of her time…
Zipozakhe plans to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant 2015 to be hosted in Miami, Florida.
