It’s happening again. Gamers, fans and lovers of all things digital are going to be coming together at this year’s E3 2017 event.
What can we expect? What will be announced? More importantly, will we finally find out what exactly Death Stranding is all about? All these questions will (hopefully) be answered when E3 2017 opens its doors and invites us into the wonderful world of gaming. In anticipation of the event, I’ve put together a list of games I’m excited to see at this years event. Here’s hoping that the gaming gods actually read Fortress of Solitude and make these dreams come true. So, in no particular order, here are a few of my favourite E3 things to look forward to.
Death Stranding – WTF?
Kojima has been teasing us with little tidbits about his upcoming game Death Stranding. And while we have already seen two trailers for the enigmatic game, I still have little to no idea what the heck it’s about. All I know is that Death Stranding will star an oiled up Norman Reedus and a sinister looking Mads Mikkelsen commanding a group of skeletal soldiers. While this alone is enough reason to be excited about the game, I would love to see some gameplay or at least get some indication of what the gameplay would be like or, even better, a release date of some kind. If anything, I’m just excited to see what the mind behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise can come up with.
Next Assasin’s Creed Game – Where it all began.
Ok, so for quite some time now we’ve been hearing rumours of a new Assasin’s Creed game. And recently a screenshot that might or might not be from the rumoured game surfaced. If these leaks are to be believed, our next stop in the Assasin’s Creed saga will be the ancient Egypt. The game is said to be a prequel to the series, which would be a great reason to start afresh. I personally won’t mind scaling the pyramids, exploring the desert sands or sailing the Nile (as the most recent leaked image seems to indicate). Hopefully, this drastic change of scenery will do the series some good. There’s little doubt in my mind that Ubisoft will officially announce the game at E3 2017.
Far Cry 5 – Grab your six-shooters and get ready to mosey on out.
After personally becoming a bit disillusioned with the FarCry franchise as a whole, Far Cry Primal grabbed me by the throat and pulled me back into its primitive world. It was a game that proved just how good the guys at Ubisoft are at creating interesting and immersive open worlds. Now, if those pesky leaks are to be believed, it seems that the next game in the franchise could be set in the good old wild west. Think about it – grabbing your horse heading out to catch some outlaws (dead or alive), grabbing a shot of whisky afterwards at the nearest saloon – it all feels quite Far Cry-ish. Keep in mind that the this is all based on quite a bit of speculation but man I think a western setting would be a perfect fit for the franchise.
The Last of Us 2 – Ellie’s revenge.
I have to be honest, I screamed like a little girl when Naughty Dog announced The Last of Us 2 at PSX 2016. Although it was only a short little trailer, it established enough of the darker tone that the game will be going for to get me all aboard the hype train. What we do know is that players will be taking on the role of Ellie after the events of the first game. From what we saw during the short trailer, it seems Ellie is really pissed and sets out to do what any thoroughly pissed person would… seek revenge. So, although this could turn out to be your typical tale of revenge, I’m sure that the guys at Naughty Dog have some trick up their sleeves to spice things up. There has even been some speculation that Joel will be back. All we really know for certain is that there will be loads of spore infected zombies and possibly some bullets flying. I’m hoping that Naughty Dog shows off some gameplay, or at least another trailer, that would give us more insight into the game’s plot.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 – Dum dum dum, dum-te-dum, dum-te-dum.
The announcement that Star Wars Battlefront 2 would have a single player campaign gave me goosebumps and had me excitedly re-watching all the Star Wars movies. Finally, we will be able to experience a fresh new Star Wars story on the current generation of consoles. In all honesty, Star Wars Battlefront was a more than a competent multiplayer game, but the lack of a single player campaign was quite a glaring mistake. Luckily, the guys over at DICE have listened to the feedback from fans and, faster than you can say “bantha poodoo”, they announced that the next game would include a single player campaign. Players will be taking on the role of a female Imperial soldier. Gasp! Yes, that’s right, you are playing as one of the bad guys. Could this be a tale of redemption, where an Imperial soldier discovers the evil that is the Empire and decides to rebel? Or will you just be killing loads of Rebel scum? Hopefully, we get some answers at E3 2017. Although I am all hyped for the single player campaign, I truly hope that DICE shows off some of the game’s multiplayer (along with some of the single player) action.
New Marvel games from Square Enix – Avengers assemble and Guardians get your groove on!
Although we’ve had official confirmation from Square Enix that they have teams currently working on games based on Marvel properties, only one of these games has been announced thus far, the Avengers project. What we do know about this game is that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal are working on it and that it will be packed with all the characters and environments Marvel fans are familiar with.
Square Enix did say that they would reveal more in 2018 but, come on, there is no better time than the present. With E3 around the corner, I truly hope that they reveal more about the project. While the Avengers project has been announced, another Square Enix project is still being kept under wraps. According to rumours, there is also a Guardians of the Galaxy game in the works at Square Enix, which I hope they officially announce at E3 2017. Either way, I think that after DC and Warner Bros’ success, it’s about time that Marvel gets its share of the limelight.
God of War – This is my axe.
I’m known as a patient kind of guy. Having said this, even I am starting to get jittery about the lack of news regarding the latest God of War game. The new, more emotional and narrative-driven approach the game is taking has me thoroughly intrigued. There are so many questions that need answering. Like, why does Kratos have a kid? Who is his mother? How did the big angry guy survive the last game? And, more importantly, what’s up with the axe? The gameplay that has been shown looks fittingly epic but, I need another update, gameplay trailer or, better yet, a release date.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man game – Swing some news our way.
This was another reveal that had me jumping up and down on my couch like a deranged Tom cruise. Who wouldn’t be excited at the prospect of a new Spider-Man game? The best part is that it is being developed by Insomniac games, the team behind the fast-paced Sunset Overdrive. We’ve already been treated to a teaser trailer, however, I need to see more! Not only will Insomniac be working closely with Marvel, but they have also been given complete freedom to shape the story and make it truly unique (which could go either way). It’s been almost a year since the game was announced and then…. silence. Please Insomniac, show us some more gameplay or at least reveal a release date. I literally can’t wait to swing through New York again as everybody’s favourite neighbourhood Spider-Man.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider – More tombs to raid? Yes, please.
Although based completely on speculation, a while back news surfaced that a new Tomb Raider game was in the works. And why wouldn’t there be? The last two were spectacular games. There have been no official announcements yet, but a leaked image seems to indicate that the next game in the franchise could be titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider. My guess is that Microsoft will probably use the game as a way to show off the capabilities of the Xbox Scorpio. So, expect some sort of timed exclusivity deal between the two parties. What I hope we see is some sort of announcement and maybe a reveal trailer. All I know is that I am definitely up for raiding some more tombs as Lara Croft.
New Wolfenstein and The Evil Within – Bring it on.
With the announcement of a new Fallout being highly unlikely and Quake Champions already announced, the question remains, what will Bethesda announce at E3 2017? Well, thanks once again to the rumour mill, I fully expect them to announce either a new Wolfenstein or The Evil Within (or both). Bethesda has teased that there are currently at least two properties in development and it would make sense for both of these to make a return. After the success of the previous Wolfenstein game, I fully expected that there will already be a follow-up in the works. In all likelihood, it will probably be set in the same dystopian future that the previous game was set in. Expect more nazi robots, lots of blood and loads of bullets flying everywhere.
With regards to The Evil Within, we know that the guys at Tango Works have been busy with something and I expect that something to be a follow-up to the original game. I guess we will just have to wait and see what Bethesda have up their sleeve. They have yet to disappoint.
These are just some of the things that have us excited for E3 2017. All in all, it looks like this year has the potential to be another great year for gaming. It’s a good time to be a gamer.
