David S. Goyer Talks Superman vs. Batman

According to David S. Goyer Zack Snyder’s still-untitled Superman/Batman film is racing through pre-production and quite far along. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, the writer/director, best known for his work on films including Blade, the Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel, added, “One of the things that has been fun for us is we’re a bit a further along than what I think people realize.”

Goyer also praised Nolan for the pair’s creative partnership across the three Dark Knight films, which rebooted Batman to critical acclaim between 2005 and 2012. “Chris had never read comic books: he didn’t know the world. So he trusted me on that franchise and with Superman to know what was canon: what could be changed and what couldn’t be changed,” said Goyer. “Early in Batman Begins he said ‘does he have to have a utility belt?’, and I said ‘yes’. And he said ‘why?’. And then he showed me a design and it was all black. And I said ‘it has to be yellow’, and he said ‘oh…'” “I identified the 10 things that remained sticky about Batman and Superman, wrote them up and said to Chris ‘These are the 10 things that should be in the movie. Like the 10 commandments. As long as we honour that, we’ll be good,” said Goyer.

When it comes to the upcoming Man of Steel film the writer had plenty to add, especially the Ben Affleck casting. “From a fan point of view, we’re conscious of that when you’re working on these things, but you can’t let yourself be paralyzed by that,” he says. “At the end of the day, you still have to create something. And if you try and think, ‘Well what would the fans like?’ then you stop being creative. It’s sort of like, ‘Where does it end?’ You have to write the story that you want to write, and hope that people want to see it.”

So who does Goyer believe will win the Batman versus Superman fight? “Most comic book purists would say Batman,” he says, “because he is the ultimate strategist. Even though it makes no sense whatsoever. If Superman just flicked his finger, Batman would be done for.”
