With even more attention focused on Squirrel Girl now that the casting of her in the live-action New Warriors show has been announced, it’s important to remember just what makes her so special: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl v2 #22! This issue makes her so special! And so does every other issue of this series!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl v2 #22

It’s a trip to the Savage Land for Doreen Green – the unbeatable Squirrel Girl – and her best friend Nancy. And Tippy is there too! When they win a competition and jet their way to the legendary lost world of the Marvel U, it’s the vacation of a lifetime as they get to play with dinosaurs. Unfortunately, some kids from Latveria are there too. Yet it could spark an unlikely romance, and the gift shop at the airport has a few treats as well. But could there be a sinister reason for them all being brought there?

Now that’s out the way, it has to be said that this is one of the most fun issues of this series so far. It’s a playful romp from beginning to… well, two pages before the end. Crammed full of hilariously intelligent jokes and a few fourth wall-breaking moments, it proves once again that Ryan North and Erica Henderson aren’t afraid to have fun with this series. It marches to the beat of its own unconventional drummer and isn’t afraid to do so. Granted, if you’re looking for action or angst, this isn’t the issue for you, but if you’re a Squirrel Girl fan then you’ll love it.

Plus, it offers over nineteen hours of reading entertainment.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl v2 #22

Well, it does and it doesn’t. Fans will know of the sneaky little jokes and challenges thrown into every issue, from computer coding to binary counting on your fingers, and this time around one of the funniest jokes revolves around Erica Henderson’s amazing drawings of an airplane and how long the flight to the Savage Land takes. Of course, despite being advised to read the comic in real time – which would take nineteen hours – nobody’s going to do that. But they could!

Yet the enjoyment the issue brings will last way beyond those nineteen hours. It’ll last a lifetime.

Other classic moments include the groan-inducing titles of classic computer coding books, some hilarious gift shop products, and most importantly every statement made about Doctor Doom and Latveria. Even the cover of the Latverian passport is funny! Oh, and then there’s the backup story featuring Kraven the Hunter battling the Poachmaster General. Seriously.

So what are you waiting for? Buy it! Read it! And if you already bought it and read it, read it again!
