Watch: Hearing Chewbacca Talking English on The Empire Strikes Back Set Is So Strange

Written by

Wookiee’s don’t talk, right? Chewie has always communicated with Han Solo using strange grunts and growls, right? Wrong. This early footage from The Empire Strikes Back set shows Chewbacca talking English.

Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew has tweeted a video, courtesy of documentarian Jamie Benning, showing an earlier version of the film where the character had English speaking lines. And it’s really strange to watch.

“Where the hell have you been?” Chewbacca shouts from atop the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. “Where you going? What time are we leaving then?” Chewie continues in a bit of back-and-forth with Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

If you’re like me, you’re always wondering what the Wookiees and droids saying. But seeing him talk like this also seems very out of place. I’m just so used to the roars.
