Justice League is coming, and we’re bound to be introduced to a host of new characters in the DCEU. Even so, the casting news can’t come fast enough and we’re already debating who should play whom in future films. (It also doesn’t help that the rumour mill goes into overdrive every time an actor follows Geoff Johns or DC Comics on Twitter.)
So, what we’ve done is assembled some of the names that we think should be first in line to play the 10 iconic characters that are yet to make an appearance in DC’s film universe. Check out our picks below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
Our pick: Ben Barnes
We’ve already discussed the prospect of Ben Barnes as Dick Grayson/Nightwing in a previous piece, but we still believe the Westworld actor should be at the front of the queue to portray the former Boy Wonder. From the acting to the physique, he’s the natural choice to lace up the superhero boots.
Alternative pick: Milo Ventimiglia
2. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
Our pick: John Krasinski
If Green Lantern Corps is set to become the buddy-cop film it’s rumoured to be, then a good comedic actor will be necessary to portray Hal Jordan. While most people hope it’s Armie Hammer (who is actually our second pick) as Jordan, we think that The Office‘s John Krasinski might offer better value for money. Also, he’s funnier. Sorry, Armie.
Alternative pick: Armie Hammer
3. Green Lantern (John Stewart)
Our pick: Idris Elba
Fact #1: if Idris Elba is in your film, it’ll be a million times better than if he wasn’t. Imagine Elba as the wiser John Stewart having to put up with Hal’s crap in a cosmic comedy? Make it happen, DC. We know you can smell those dollars, too.
Alternative pick: Sterling K. Brown
Our pick: Jeff Bridges
For Darkseid, you need someone who’s both smooth and menacing at the same time. Look no further than the inimitable Jeff Bridges, who’s capable of pulling off villainous roles in his sleep. Would you rather see anyone else as Darkseid? Well, that’s just your opinion, man.
Alternative pick: Liam Neeson
Our pick: Carla Gugino
Considering Selina Kyle (Catwoman) should be around Affleck’s Batman’s age in this universe, we’re going for the sultry Carla Gugino. Not only does she have the sex appeal to portray the elegant role, but she’s got a wealth of talent and experience in the superhero film genre as well.
Alternative pick: Lena Headey
6. Poison Ivy
Our pick: Jessica Chastain
It’s a damn shame that an actress with the talent of Jessica Chastain hasn’t appeared in a DC film to date. This can be remedied, though, by casting her as the queen of botany, Poison Ivy. From the look to her overall magnetism, Chastain possesses it all to nail the role.
Alternative pick: Haley Bennett
Our pick: Jane Levy
When you see pictures of Jane Levy, the first thing that comes to mind is Barbara Gordon. The Shameless actress is on the brink of breaking out in the big leagues, and this would be the perfect vehicle for her to achieve it. Also, Joss Whedon has said he’s not looking for a huge name, so Levy might be in the running.
Alternative pick: Emma Stone
Our pick: Josh Gad
After all the teasing he’s done on social media, we’re convinced about Josh Gad as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. The character needs a bit of playfulness and silliness, since he is pretty outrageous, and we think that Gad has the balance to be the ideal candidate for this gawking villain.
Alternative pick: Mark Addy
Our pick: Mahershala Ali
Is there a hotter actor in Hollywood right now than Mahershala Ali? He’s shown that he’s capable of nailing any role you require of him, so why not get him to portray Superman’s cerebral nemesis, Brainiac? We think this is a match made in heaven for everyone involved.
Alternative pick: Matthew Goode
10. Green Arrow
Our pick: Charlie Hunnam
Does Oliver Queen look like Charlie Hunnam, or does Hunnam look like Queen? If there ever was an actor born to portray a role, it’s Hunnam as Green Arrow. Their resemblance is uncanny, and Hunnam’s equally adept at playing the badass, too.
Alternative pick: Alexander Skarsgård
