Bye Bye Mary Jane

Written by

Sony Pictures has decided to cut the character of Mary Jane Watson (Shailene Woodley) from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, just after announcing the release dates for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 (June 10th, 2016 and May 4th, 2018 respectively). Woodley (of The Descendants) was set to star as Spidey’s other love interest MJ in the sequel. Talking recently with EW, she reveals you’re gonna have to wait a little while to see her performance.

“Of course I’m bummed,” confessed Woodley in an EW interview. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

But will it be Shailene playing Mary Jane or will we see someone else take the role? There are already many rumours surfacing that she will be replaced – due to her busy schedule. Could this also mean that the proposed plot where Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy gets killed could be true? If Marc Webb (hehe!) follows the comic book story line we might just say good-bye to Stacy too.

Honestly, while it sucks for her to be cut from the film, I’m glad. It’s already been stated that they are planning to kill Gwen Stacy. There’s a interview out there were Emma Stone says she was asked if she knew that Gwen Stacy dies. She said that she did, and that was precisely the reason she took the role. And so, it would be a terrible disservice to the impact that Gwen’s death is supposed to have and to the character of MJ if Gwen dies and MJ is introduced in the same movie. Especially if Gwen dies early in the movie. We just spent a movie getting attached to the character of Gwen. Killing her at the beginning of two or even half way through it would be too soon. If she dies in two, it should be at the end of the movie and that’s what we should be left with. If you really have to introduce MJ in two, do it the way it was done in the comics, with a sort of cat and mouse game of Aunt May constantly telling Peter that she wants to introduce him to her friend’s niece. Maybe we met her but she and Peter never cross paths until the very end of the movie and Peter opens the door and we get the line, “Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot.” And then cut to black. Either MJ should only be teased in 2 and Gwen dies at the end, or MJ does not appear at all, or MJ is teased, Gwen dies and MJ shows up just before we cut to black. Killing Gwen any earlier in the movie would be a waste and ruin the impact her death is supposed to have.
