Bryan Cranston Explains Why He Turned Down Lex & Commissioner Gordon

Bryan Cranston probably had a lot of people confused about his recent film choices, most notably turning down the roles of Lex Luthor and Commissioner Gordon in favour of Zordon in the upcoming Power Rangers movie.

Yes, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. Especially when you consider how perfect he would have been for either part.

Kevin Smith’s AMC series Geeking Out caught up with Bryan Cranston and asked about his decision. His answer:

“Villain-wise… I’m interested in creating a role. I’d love to do something that hasn’t been done before,” Cranston said. “Lex Luthor has been… there’s been a lot of that. I’ve been asked to take a look at Commissioner Gordon. That sort of thing, and it’s like ‘I would be one in several..’ and it’s like ‘I kind of would like to carve out a new identity.’ Mr. Sinister has always been someone… It would be very cool…”

Cranston provided the voice of Gordon in the Batman: Year One animated movie. Perhaps, he felt that he already played the role before. Or maybe he is a Marvel fan?

Nevertheless, the role of Commissioner Gordon was given to J.K. Simmons, who seems to be just as perfect for the role:
