DC’s most infamous heroine gets an all-new re-launched title. The Legend of Wonder Woman takes us back to the beginning of time as the universe is created and the story of Diana, Princess of Themyscira, is re-told.
This issue deals largely with Hippolyta and her longing to be a mother. Zeus honoured Hippolyta and her select Amazons for building a nation free of corruption. He bestowed upon them the gift of immortality. However, this gift would prove to be Hippolyta’s greatest curse. Being an immortal, she was unable to bear children. She sought a way to give birth but her actions led to a war among the Gods and Titans and the Amazon army was obliterated as she watched her sisters die before her. The Gods, who need worship, turned to Hippolyta and asked her to rule Themyscira and in return selected Amazons will granted the gift of child-birth every ten years so that the Amazon army will flourish once more. Hippolyta was the first to bear a daughter; the child who would become the legend that is Wonder Woman.
The art in this issue is great. It is a new approach entirely. While most of these titles tend to look dark and gloomy, The Legend of Wonder Woman isn’t at all. This issue is illustrated perfectly and makes use of bright colours, great character proportions, even with the slightly cartoony look. The overall art is polished and matches the story perfectly. It is as though you are reading a fairy tale. This issue is just that beautiful.
The Legend of Wonder Woman is a great release and one that should definitely be picked up by fans of the character. It is the first of a 9 part series and if the upcoming issues match the standard of this one, readers will be in for a treat!
