In part 2 of The Grievous journey of Ichabod Azrael, Ichabod is in the afterlife and he is on a mission to find his way back to the real world so that he can be reunited with his love. He comes across a demon that points him in a direction where he believes he will find what he needs to return. And with two of his “companions” he sets out on his journey.
At the beginning of this story you feel like you are in the dark as to what is going on, but as the story progresses it draws you into it’s world and slowly starts revealing everything to you, I loved that. It feels like we are in the shoes of the main character, that as he is figuring everything out so are we, we are not just watching him go through the motions because we already know what is happening. His journey is our journey.
Although you can tell that the main character is a heartless, cold-blooded killer you sympathise with him and his longing to return to the love of his life. This invests you even more into the story.
I enjoyed the writing and visual style that they used. The writing seemed to be almost intellectual, with the use of big words and phrases instead of just regular simple language. I felt like it added more to the story and even made you connect to the characters more. The majority of this comic is in black and white, with a few pieces of colour here and there. I loved the representation of that. The black and white was used to show the world of the afterlife where majority of the story takes place, but whenever they speak of or show the real world, it is represented in colour. You could almost say that the black and white reveals the bleakness and despair of the afterlife, yet the colour represents the hope and life that the real world offers.
I love that this story keeps you guessing and really draws you into its world. You come across interesting characters that make you question what is happening and entices you all the more. There are even plot twists that you do not see coming that leave you confused which is great. Despite this being a comic book I was on the edge of my proverbial seat, wanting to know where this was going and what was going to happen next. You connect with the character and root for them when they are in a dangerous situation. All this is a testament to the writing. You can tell that the writer has cleverly thought out the plot and has a clear idea as to where he wants the story to go.
The story ends on a cliffhanger like a good comic series should and has definitely left me wanting to know what is going to happen next. If you’re a comic book lover or just enjoy a good story I would recommend giving this a read.
