The All-Star series was created by DC to give writers a chance to explore the complex universes of its biggest characters without being concerned with continuity or an over-arching storyline. In All-Star Superman, Grant Morrison explores many facets of the Superman world, from Clark Kent’s early years in Smallville to Supermen from the future.

All-Star Superman #1 - Comic Review

The series does not dwell too much on Superman’s early years only using four panels to outline his past. The narrative touches on complex concepts like genetic modification, cloning, time-travel and a whole lot of weird and bizarre scenarios that may confuse the novice but intrigue the well-read.

The artwork is simple, employing fine line-work, uncluttered backgrounds and a medium colour tone. The character design is bulky and might not please everyone’s eye but has an old illustrative feel that has a certain charm to it.

Well written characters and playful storylines make All-Star Superman an enjoyable read, worthy of the Superman legacy. This volume collects the first six issues of the acclaimed series and features Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Bizarro, and more.

If you’re like me and love comic books but don’t follow all the different publications or know about all the multiple narratives for a given character then something like All-Star Superman is for you. Granted, you will still be somewhat confused at times. The stand-alone nature of a graphic novel means you only have to know the main back-story of a character to enjoy it.
