Hank Pym is one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe. The inventor of Ultron and the man of multiple identities is given his own graphic novel collection. Thankfully, it is a good one.
How do you choose an arc for a character that has so many identities? A character that has so many personalities? Well, Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes Graphic Novel has made it happen and they have chosen a great series of issues.
The graphic novel opens up with pages from the origin of Ant-Man from Marvel’s Tales to Astonish as Hank Pym uses his Pym particles to start his crime fighting career. This is followed by The Mighty Avengers Arc where Hank Pym has adopted a new identity to pay tribute to his late wife. We see the Wasp return as Hank Pym adopts this identity. The return of Scarlet Witch has caused a stir among what is left of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The Dark Avengers and H.A.M.M.E.R have become government favourites, thanks to Norman Osborne repelling the Skrull Threat. So Hank and his newly recruited Mighty Avengers are not popular at all, especially in the eyes of the Dark Avengers, a ragtag group of villains posing as the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Hank Pym makes this read a great one. You can’t help but love his egotistical rants, his arrogance and his sheer brilliance. He proves time and time again that he is one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe and now he finds out that he is also a capable leader, even if he is not the most popular leader. This arc is perfectly written, it really works to Hank Pym’s strengths and the added humour is a great breath of fresh air. Hank Pym makes a memorable read thanks to the writing and some rather great contemporary art. His new Wasp identity looks great and his new recruits are drawn well too. Each character looks great as the are introduced to the pages of this comic. There is a great amount of detail put into every page and this all works towards creating a winning read.
This book is definitely my favourite in this artworks run. This could have been a disaster; a man with so many Identities could have easily fallen victim to poor selection but these issues are perfect. We can only hope that we see another of his characters appear later on in this collection. Hank Pym is definitely one of the most interesting characters in the Marvel Universe.
