You know those Christmas-themed episodes of all your favourite shows that air weeks before Christmas? That’s exactly what DC Rebirth Holiday Special is. It’s warm, fuzzy and contains all the feels to get you pumped for Boney M jingles and eggnog. So put on your Santa hat and celebrate with DC’s heroes and villains.
From Paul Dini returning to write a Harley story to Damian Wayne being a little less of a douche to Jon Kent, all the main players in Rebirth are here and ready to make you smile. An all-star cast of writers and artists contributed in bringing this holiday book to life, and I appreciate how most of the artists implemented more upbeat styles and colours rather than create grimdark Christmas tales—something that would’ve undoubtedly happened with the New 52.
As with any anthology, some of the stories shine brighter than the others and leave a more lasting impression. For me, it was a toss-up between James Tynion IV’s “A Flash Christmas Carol” and Heath Corson’s “The Night We Saved Christmas”, which features the return of Detective Chimp. While the utter ridiculousness of “The Night…” was a welcome addition to this anthology, “A Flash Christmas Carol” narrowly beats it to top spot as it contains all the hope we’ve come to know and appreciate from Barry Allen. It’s the kind of story that will light up any kid’s face and make them believe in the power of the Christmas spirit.
Sure, the Christmas-themed tales are fun and make me feel all bubbly inside, but will I read them again in a few months’ time? Actually, I will. 2016 has been a challenging year for the world, filling us with heartache, fear and uncertainty. But we need to find the silver lining in the dark clouds, and this is what this book challenges us to do. No matter how bad it gets, there’s always hope and that can never be taken away. Thanks, DC, and happy holidays to all.
