Writer: Albert Uderzo
Artist: Albert Uderzo

This thirty-fourth edition of this beloved series celebrates the fifty years that Asterix and Obelix have been in existence. The book is more of a retrospective than a new work. It juxtaposes older episodes in the series together with the planning of Asterix and Obelix’s birthday.

Despite the series’ achievement over the years you cannot help but feel that this edition lacks the humour, sharp wit and good story telling that characterized former issues. It feels disjointed and references itself too much, instead of experiencing a great new adventure one feels robbed and left with dull satire and a non-existent storyline. The classical art reproductions are marvelous and Uderzo’s line work remains charming despite it being less refined than in former publications.
