It is a sad day indeed for fans of all things Blizzard related as Chris Metzen announced that he would be retiring from video games.
Chris Metzen, the man who helped craft and mold the worlds and lore of Blizzard games such as StarCraft, Warcraft, and Diablo has decided to retire from video games. Metzen explained why he made this very tough decision in a blog post, stating that he believes that it was time to take it easy and slow down:
“The reason I use the word ‘retire’ is because I’m not going to some other company or starting up new projects or anything remotely like that. It’s been a long, amazing stretch of years. Now it’s time to slow it down. Rest. Lay around on the couch and get fat. Well, fatter…”
“Seriously though, I’ll be focusing on the one thing that matters most to me in all the world—my family. They’re the core of my life and the source of my deepest joy and inspiration. In addition to raising our two little ones, we recently welcomed our new baby into the family! Being home with them all, having time and space to really live…to love my wife with all my strength…that’s my career now.”
For many Metzen is the reason why they fell in love with Blizzard games in the first place. I remember spending hours on end reading up on Warcraft lore and getting lost in the myriad of StarCraft stories. We would like to wish Mr. Metzen all the best in his future endeavors, even if those endeavors might only be taking it easy and slowing down for a change.
