It’s confirmed! Meet your new Batman. Warner Bros. announced that Ben Affleck will be the next big name Hollywood star to play the role of Batman on the big screen. The 41-year-old will star in the still untitled movie expected to be released in the summer of 2015. Warner Bros. announced that the movie would include both Batman and Superman, with Henry Cavill, 30, revising his role as the Man of Steel.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some,” Warner Bros President Greg Silverman said in a statement.
Snyder, who also directed Man of Steel, said in a statement that Mr Affleck will provide an “interesting counter-balance” to 31-year old Cavill’s Clark Kent. “(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” said Snyder. “I can’t wait to work with him.”
Nobody saw this one coming for sure. Speculation about the casting of Batman had previously revolved around Josh Brolin, Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, and a handful of other names mentioned in off-the-record discussions around Hollywood regarding who was on the short-list for consideration as Batman. Most fans thought Affleck’s remarks about his Daredevil experience made it highly unlikely he would want to play Batman.
I can totally see Affleck as Bruce Wayne. He is a great actor. But Batman!? Could this mean that Affleck could also be directing a Justice League movie? What do you think? I think he will do a good Bruce Wayne, since he would be able to make the character his own and not necessarily have to be the brooding TDK version.
Snyders casting decision has always been top notch (think 300, Watchmen, Suckerpunch (regardless of the film itself) and Man of Steel). The cast he assembles is near perfect. Affleck’s name did come up when it was first announces, so at least we know that he was in Snyders mind for a while. Affleck also did turn it down at first. So I’m curious as to what caused him to change his mind and how does Snyder envision this Batman…
