When an ex-army sniper finds himself on top of an office building wielding a sniper rifle, you don’t need to be a genius to figure out what’s about to happen. Six rounds are fired and five are left dead in his wake. Within minutes of him leaving, police are on the scene, accumulating bags of evidence. They soon have a suspect who is quickly arrested, and whilst in custody the suspect asks for Jack Reacher. Like a mythical creature, Reacher appears and begins to investigate the, seemingly, open-and-shut case.

Jack Reacher - 01

In typical Tom Cruise fashion, the movie highlights his talents and interests; fast cars, gorgeous babes and the mandatory topless scene (although he should strongly consider putting his pecks to rest). This movie seemed dated and should have existed in the 80’s, when Tom Cruise was still a big deal. I could have sworn I’ve seen this plot in a television series some years ago and was acceptable on TV, but not the Big Screen. Tom Cruise is surrounded by relative unknowns except for a couple of familiar faces which adds to his superstar appeal. Although the plot is beyond saving, Reacher’s funny banter and above average fight scenes almost makes up for this dead duck. One has to wonder why a director would sign on for this project and why Tom Cruise would produce it himself. This just felt like a type of ‘Mission Impossible Lite’.

Jack Reacher - 02

I wanted to like this movie, but unfortunately it fell flat with its plot twists and its round about fashion of getting to the answers. There was no need for any urgency, which detracted from the story lines and no high-action scene that left you on the edge of your seat. This movie looked awesome in the trailer; unfortunately those were all the best parts. It had the potential to be a decent movie, but it failed to impress by focussing on everything else instead of a good story.
