During a live stream presentation for the upcoming Gears of War 4, studio head at The Coalition Rod Fergusson confirmed that there currently was a Gears of War film in development at Universal.
Film producers Scott Stuber (The Kingdom) and Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are both on board to produce. A Gears of War film has been rumored for a few years now, but according to Fergusson, in an interview with Variety, now is the right time for a Gears of War film.
“As a way to support the franchise, the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”
No release date or information regarding the plot of the movie has been revealed yet. If the movie follows Marcus Fenix or if it is a totally new story with new characters we’ll just have to wait and see. Regarding transitioning games to film Fergusson believes that the secret is to not only make the films for gamers.
“I think you have to let the movies be the movie, They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie”
Is this the right time for a Gears of War film? I guess we’ll have to wait until some more information about the project is made available. In the meantime, you can get your fill of Gears of War when Gears of War 4 releases in October 2016.
