DC is expanding again. It seems that Lionsgate is turning The Monolith, the comic book series by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, into a movie.

For those unfamiliar with The Monolith series, the story centers around recovering drug-addict Alice Cohen who inherits her recently deceased grandmother’s house in Brooklyn. There she discovers a diary detailing the creation of a monster in the 1930s bent on revenge for the slaying of a good man. The Monolith originally ran for 12 issues during 2004-2005. The original comic has gained cult status and was a big hit amongst fans.

Although The Monolith was initially published by DC Comics, and is set within the DC universe, the rights reverted to Gray and Palmiotti in 2013. This probably means that we shouldn’t be expecting any Batman appearances (the guy is in every DC property these days) anytime soon.

Dave Wilson, who is the creative director at Deadpool helmer Tim Miller’s Blur Studios, will direct from a script by Barnett Brettler. The project will mark Wilson’s feature directorial debut. Erwin Stoff (13 Hours, Burnt) is producing.

The big question is… in a sea of superhero films already on the way, can Lionsgate make this film standout? Furthermore, is this something fans actually want to see?
