Kick-Ass is making a return, and this time, things will be a bit different as the series will feature a new African-American female lead.

Kick-Ass

The latest Kick-Ass series will feature a new supporting cast along with the new female lead and won’t take place in New York, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Mark Millar, the creator of the series commented on why it will be undergoing these changes. He said that he want’s the series to be a “legacy” comic that will focus on the story arcs rather than the hero and their identity.

“Kick-Ass is like James Bond or Doctor Who where with a new face and a new situation and it suddenly feels very exciting. Every four volumes or so I want a different person in the mask. Sometimes it might even only last a single volume or even a single issue.”

Millar said that the reason for him returning to the character was “simple longing”. Millar, who has spent the last few years working on sci-fi comics and superhero epics, missed the concept of the Kick-Ass series and wanted to revisit it.

“I really just missed Kick-Ass. It was a funny book because it was about a guy who had no powers, no gadgets and wasn’t very good and yet it was massive. We had two movies in our first five years, games merchandise and so on. It’s been three years and Johnny and I both just really missed the concept. It’s fun to write and after all the fantasy and space opera and vast budget superheroes it’s actually been amazing to get into something grounded again.”

The first arch of the new series will be written by Mark with John Romita Jr. handling the art, thereafter Daniel Way will be taking over the writing duties from Millar.

The next volume of Kick-Ass will begin in January 2017 alongside the first issue of a new ongoing Hit Girl series.
