It has been confirmed that James Earl Jones would be reprising his role as the iconic voice of Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kennedy confirmed that James Earl Jones would be returning as the voice of Darth Vader. She also revealed that David Prowse would not be returning as the man inside the famous suit, he will instead be replaced by a variety of actors.
There was initially a lot of questions around how much of Darth Vader we would see in Rogue One. Regarding this Kennedy explained that we will definitely see him in the film, but that he will be used sparingly.
“He will be in the movie sparingly, but at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.”
It was also explained that Darth Vader’s reputation in Rogue One is a less fearsome than in A New Hope. Although he still plays the part of the Emperor’s enforcer, he has become something of a legend in the Empire ranks, this also means that he is practically unknown to the Rebels.
“Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.”
The main antagonist in Rogue One will be Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Orson Krennic, an Imperial officer who wants nothing more to secure his place next to the Emperor’s side. Krennic and Vader will not be friends and will barely be allies as Krennic is seen as a threat to the Sith Lord.
Rogue one: A Star Wars Story is set to release in December 2016 and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Jonathan Aris.
