Besides being incredibly loyal, man’s best friend can also be incredibly heroic and protective. It seems that even superheroes like Batman and Superman find them to be great companions in the fight against evil. Here are our top cape wearing, superpowered superhero dogs…
Krypto the Superdog is Superman’s pet. He was the family dog in Jor-El’s household, and was used for a test flight of the rocket that eventually carried baby Kal-El to Earth. However, Krypto’s rocket was blown off course and drifted in space for many years until the rocket picked up the signal from Kal-El’s rocket that landed on Earth. Growing up alongside Superboy, he was raised in Smallville on the Kent Farm, although he later lives in Metropolis with Clark Kent and Lois Lane. He has been a member of Team Superman, the Legion of Super-Pets and the Space Canine Patrol Agents. Krypto was created by Otto Binder and Curt Swan, first appearing in Adventure Comics #210.
Ms. Lion is a rambunctious male dog who belongs to Aunt May. Although he doesn’t have any superpowers, he became a founding member of the Pet Avengers and saved his feline team-mate, Hairball.
Lucky’s original name was Arrow, but Hawkeye quickly renamed him. Lucky is missing his left eye due to the trauma he sustained after rescuing Hawkeye. Lucky is based off Matt Fraction’s dog, ‘Captain Applejack,’ who had to be put down shortly before Fraction started writing Hawkeye.
Ace the Bat-Hound
Ace was a German Shepherd dog originally owned by an engraver named John Wilker. He was found by Batman and Robin after his master was kidnapped by a gang of counterfeiters. With his master unable to fight off the kidnappers, Wilker’s dog jumped to his defense. Ace put up a savage attack but was beaten into unconsciousness by the thugs. The grateful dog raced the Batmobile out of the Batcave on a subsequent outing and, rather than return him, Batman and Robin took him along.
Hyperdog is a super intelligent, talking Doberman in a man-shaped robotic exoskeleton. Kemlo is a humorous and kind individual, hiding his feelings of inadequacy at being a dog in a human world. He eventually falls in love with a former prostitute called Neural ‘Nette and the two become intimate despite the species difference. Five years after the Ultima incident, Hyperdog and his wife adopt a young Anubis-headed girl named Cynothia Cephali. He eventually replaces Major Cindercott as head of Precinct 10.
Dynomutt, Dog Wonder
Dynomutt, Dog Wonder is a 30-minute Saturday morning animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The show centers on a Batman-esque superhero, the Blue Falcon, and his assistant, bumbling yet generally effective robot dog Dynomutt, who can produce a seemingly infinite number of mechanical devices from his body. As with many other animated superheroes of the era, no origins for the characters are ever provided.
Cosmo was a former test animal of the Soviet Space Program. He was launched into Earth’s orbit as part of an experiment but he drifted off into space at some point during the 1960’s, arriving in Knowhere and at some point being mutated, he eventually came to serve as the station’s security chief.
Cosmo met a distraught Nova shortly after he witnessed Suspensor turn into a zombie. He tells Nova that he’s on Knowhere, a city right inside the severed head of a giant Celestial.
The massive dog known as Lockjaw is a canine offshoot of the Inhumans an offshoot of humanity that was genetically altered by the Kree centuries ago. Lockjaw’s origins are mystery, the canine has the ability to teleport. Sources theorize that these powers were derived from exposure to the Terrigen Mists.Lockjaw is the loyal pet of the Inhuman royal family, also known as the House of Agon, particularly Crystal and her cousin Black Bolt, the most recurring ruler of the Inhumans.
