With the box office success of the Transformers movies, and a second Ninja Turtles movie in the making, it was only a matter of time before Mattel (one of the worlds leading toy makers) would jump on the big screen bandwagon.
It seems that the time has arrived, this according to the Tracking Board, as Mattel is rumoured to have teamed up with Solipsist Films and producers Alissa Phillips and Stephen L’Heureux, in order to bring this line of 80’s toys to the big screen.
For those who are either too young, or don’t remember what Dino Riders was about, let me give you a quick overview.
The Dino Riders cartoon, much like the Transformers cartoon was a TV series in the 80’s that functioned as an advertisement for the Tyco toy line (a division of Mattel toys). The main plot focussed on two futuristic factions, the evil Rulons and the noble Valorians. Both these factions found themselves teleported to pre-historic earth by a freak accident. Now stuck on earth both factions have to battle it out in order to find a way to return to their own time.
The best part of the series is that both the Valorians and the Rulons used dinosaurs as war mounts. The Valorians befriended the dinosaurs who helped them out of free will, while the Rulons used technology to bend the will of their dinosaur mounts in order to do their bidding.
It is a classic 80’s tale of good versus evil, with the only difference being, that both good and evil rode giant dinosaurs with laser weapons mounted on them. I fondly remember both the amazing toy line and Cartoon series, and hope that the people involved with making the film does justice to both the source material and the memories of my childhood. Here’s keeping my fingers crossed.
In order to get you all nostalgic below is the intro to the 80’s cartoon.
