City of Tshwane Reveals Free Movies Over Wi-Fi

The City of Tshwane and Project Isizwe have revealed plans that will see it add to the Tshwane Free Wi-Fi network. Project Isizwe, the non-profit, already responsible for the roll-out of free Wi-Fi in greater Pretoria, have been driving force behind the idea. CIIO, James Devine, announced that the project will also bring free VoIP calls (by means of an app installed on your device) in addition to the streaming service. The movie streaming service, which will be known as Wi-Fi Drive-In, will be provided in certain locations, also known as Drive-Ins, offering a variety of movies to choose from. The movies will be available on your smartphone, tablet and laptop once connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot, but only during specific times over weekends. The content will scale accordingly to the resolution of your display.

While free VoIP calls do sound like a dream, the solution will be integrated with the city’s call centres, essentially allowing citizens to report issues in the area such a faulty traffic lights, running water, etc. The initial testing phase, however, will allow users to call one another for free, although we’re uncertain if this option will be available for the duration of the project or simply during the testing period.
