Evolution of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The release of the Samsung GALAXY Note 4 by Samsung Electronics South Africa has demonstrated the continuing consumer passion for the phablet. Powerful, sleek and packed with amazing features, the latest evolution in the Note series meets the changing demands of the modern consumer.

In 2011, Samsung boldly invented an entirely new smartphone concept with the Samsung GALAXY Note, igniting the trend towards phablets (phone and tablet blend). This 1.4 GHz dual core device ran Android Gingerbread, had an 8 megapixel camera, 5.3 inch WXGA HD screen and weighed a mere 178g.

The term phablet became so widely used after the launch of the GALAXY Note that it was included in the Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year list in 2012 – defined as a merger of phone and tablet to create a smartphone with a screen size between five and seven inches.

“The launch of the Samsung GALAXY Note saw unprecedented consumer uptake thanks to the large, vivid screen, S Pen functionality and the ability to use the device for both work and play,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics SA. “Having started writing the book on consumer mobility, the launch of the Samsung GALAXY Note 2 in 2012 incorporated new features and a bigger screen, to tap into consumer demand for superior portability, alongside the ability to be creative and stay connected.”

The Samsung GALAXY Note 2 boasted an impressive 5.5 inch HD screen, Android Jelly Bean, a 1.6 GHz quad core processor and an improved battery life. By the time the Note 2 entered South Africa, market share for the phablet shot up from 0.6% in 2011 to a forecasted 22.2% in 2014. Samsung’s GALAXY Note series has consistently innovated to drive market demand and globally, the Note 2, with its improved screen size and smartphone features, sold five million units in two months after launch, paving the way for the next step in smart creativity – the Samsung GALAXY Note 3.

Taking up where its predecessors had left off, the GALAXY Note 3 sold five million units in just one month and weighed a mere 168g. The full HD screen was an impressive 5.7 inches, the camera boasted 13 megapixels and the processor was 2.3 GHz quad core*. It was powerful, big, yet still sleekly designed.

“One of the features that our customers really appreciate is the S Pen, as it maximises the usability of the large screen and makes it even easier for the user to access features and functions on the go,” explains Fleischer. “The GALAXY Note 3 saw the arrival of the Air Command feature, whereby one can execute five major functions through intuitive taps and movements of the S Pen, as well as access to Action Memo, Scrapbook and Screen Write.”

Throughout its lifespan, the GALAXY Note series has not only won several awards but has also received exceptional reviews from leading technology experts including CES, Slashgear, TechRadar, Wired and GSMArena.

With such an illustrious past, the GALAXY Note 4 has been hotly anticipated, launching with a powerful combination of productivity and performance, with a 5.7 inch Quad HD screen, 16 megapixel camera, Android KitKat, a 2.7 GHz quad core processor* and an impressive battery life.

Of course, Samsung has ensured that the GALAXY Note 4 is as compatible with the future as it is with its users, by tapping directly into the wearable technology trend. This new phablet is compatible with the soon to be released Samsung GEAR S, Samsung’s next generation smart watch, which extends the features and applications of the GALAXY Note 4 and allows the user even more flexibility and freedom. The GEAR S works with the rich feature set of the GALAXY Note and improves the user experience significantly, while the recently revealed GEAR Circle can receive calls, play music and issue voice commands to the Note.

“Checking a notification or receiving a hands-free call on your GALAXY Note 4 is now even easier with the GEAR,” says Fleischer. “The complete interactivity with the GEAR S and the GEAR Circle means that consumers can receive notifications, download emails, make calls and manage apps, all while on the move.”
