Terrence Howard Blames Robert Downey Jr. for Being Replaced in Iron Man

Although the last Iron Man film of the trilogy has come and gone, it seems that the actor cast as James Rhodes from the first film was a bit touchy on the subject on what really happened to him reprising his role in the second and third films. Terrence Howard had signed a three film deal with the producers and Marvel for his role as Rhodey, when things changed quite dramatically for him. This is what he had to say about the sudden change, way back in 2008:

“Apparently, the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they are printed on. And promises aren’t kept. Good faith and negotiations aren’t always held up.”

While you’d expect things to have been done and dusted after five whole years, the actor has recently revisited old wounds on a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live. Seemingly still fresh in his mind, Howard went on to accuse Robert Downey Jr. on why they eventually replaced him:

“It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out. We did a three-picture deal. That means you did the deal ahead of time — a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said ‘look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call me back for three months.”

After two follow up film in a space of five years, you would have expected that Howard had said his piece and vented sufficiently. On the other hand, you can understand his frustration for having been, supposedly, driven out of the role by his own friend.
