Marvel Comics to Introduce Female Muslim Superhero

In order to cater to the growing diversity of its reader, Marvel will be introducing a new female character to its superheroin line-up. Not only are they adding a new female character, the comic will revolve around a 16-year-old Muslim-American girl named Kamala Khan. Kamala lives with her conservative Pakistani parents and brother in New Jersey, USA. Marvel are set to reveal full details from the comic in January, after which it will be released on a monthly basis starting on 6th February 2014.

Sara Amanat, the series editor (who previously worked on Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men), said that “it is so important that we tell stories that reflect the ever-changing world that we live in and being a Muslim-American is so much a part of that.” She stated further that the comic will not be about what/how a Muslim, Pakistani or American should live their lives, but rather explore the Muslim-American experience of a young girl’s perspective. “It is about a young girl who is figuring out who she is and what happens when these really extraordinary things happen to her.”

Kamala is your average young comic book fan, when she discovers her new-found powers of being a polymorph – being able to change her shape, such as the ability to lengthen her arms and legs. Kamala will use the alias of Ms Marvel, the title previously belonging to Carol Danvers who possessed the powers of strength, endurance, stamina, flight, physical durability, and a human/Kree physiology that rendered her resistant to most toxins and poisons. Ms Marvel is also one of Kamala’s favourite comic book heroines. Kamala’s character and life will be written as a true-life person, in order that young women are able to relate to her.
