This past Monday saw the launch of Ubisoft’s latest addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise; Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. And in the spirit of the game, it was only right that this launch took place aboard the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship.
Upon arrival I was quite amazed at the amount of guests that were in attendance, especially when I compared the guest list to the size of the vessel. Each guest was handed a few gold coins which could be used in order to exchange for rum and a vast array of beverages. These pirates were also accommodating and kind enough to give us welcoming drinks!
The weather seemed fine and the stage was set, but not all of us were aware the Jolly Roger would be setting sail to brave the oceans of the Cape of Good Hope. Yes, the ship was revving its engines – I know right a pirate ship with engines? They must have got some blueprints from Somalia! Now this ship was packed so full I was thinking that they would never consider moving the thing in the first place. So this truly came as a surprise to both myself and Fortress’ very own Captain; Jarrod Saunders. It was great to see Superman suffer from Kryptonite like symptoms whilst onboard the boat.
Megarom and Ubisoft opened with a warm welcome and made it known that we would be embarking on an authentic pirate journey whilst being given the opportunity to play Assassin’s Creed Black Flag upon a moving Jolly Roger. Forget 3D, we were about to go 4D! The adventure would last almost two hours. In order to distract my mind from thoughts such as imminent death and sharks, I did what I always planned on doing upon my deathbed… GAME!
In life individuals often unlock trophies: You get married, have a kid, get a promotion and get a next gen console. But I unlocked one of life’s hidden trophies and that was playing Playstation upon a moving ship… whilst standing! You have never experienced gaming until you have tried this out. Not only do you get a killer core workout but you also get faced with the ultimate ego exam… not being the one to throw up at the party. I am pretty sure this qualified as an extreme sports version of gaming.
The game was thoroughly enjoyable. I managed to get to play it twice whilst on the voyage. Thankfully the second time round I was able to get a seat and the motion sickness subsided a little bit. Whilst others partied to the beats of the Black Eyed Peas, I was trying to steer away from the thoughts of carrots and peas. I found myself absorbed into the game as I ran through the city scaling rooftops and finding loot. It was really cool that when I first walked into a store in the game I already had enough money to buy some great weapons. So to the gamer that played at that machine before me, thanks very much!
Devon of Megarom games mentioned that on the PS4 things will look even better in the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag game; the environments will become even livelier and lovelier. Thus truly tempting me into purchasing that next-gen console sooner than I initially planned.
This launch was the opportunity of a life time. I doubt that The Fortress of Solitude will ever get to experience a game launch upon a pirate ship ever again. It certainly was a privilege. Thank you must go to the crew of the Jolly Roger for ensuring that we returned to land, injury and scurvy free! A big thank you to Megarom and Ubisoft, especially Rene Fraser, for organising such an impressive launch and ensuring that all the guests were given the authentic Black Flag experience.
