Geek Fest is not only a festival for Geeks by Geeks but an invitation to everyone to experience and learn about the many branches of Geek culture. The Dark Carnival, organisers of the first Geekfest in Johannesburg, aim to introduce everyone to their inner Geek and make the Festival a fun filled day for everyone from kids to grandparents and the family pet rat. With a jam-packed schedule of activities for the day, there will be something for everyone.
A geek is not only the pimply faced pale guy playing games on his computer for 5 days straight. Geek is anyone and everyone with an interest. There are music Geeks, animal Geeks, car Geeks, fashion
Geeks, travel Geeks, food Geeks, news Geeks, fitness Geeks, zombie Geeks and loads more. Geek is something to be proud of because it denotes passion. Geek Fest aims to showcase this for everyone
in a day to be remembered.
Says Kasia Jabrzemski from The Dark Carnival, “As a local retailer, we saw an opportunity to serve our customers and fans better by introducing the Geekfest concept to Johannesburg for the first
time. This is not just a gathering of nerdy-types but a day of activity crammed with mini events for the whole family.”
The attractions on the day include for the first time in South Africa, a Robo War Tournament with prizes up for grabs. There will also be Live Action Role Play or LARP demo’s, Medieval Battle demo’s in full regalia and a Cosplay Competition including the pet parade. For those that are serious about their geek knowledge and gaming skills there will be an Injustice Tournament hosted by ITF Gaming as well as a Geek quiz.
Moms and dads can relax with live entertainment and refreshments in the beer garden with a supervised play area for the mini geeks. For the tough to find items, there is even a market for
collectibles, food, props and accessories.Zombie Run South Africa will launch their second event as part of the planned agenda with the themed, The Zombie Run Geek Twilight run. The run will have an “amazing race” flair and zombie hordes to satisfy the blood-thirsty geeks amongst us.
And to close off the evening will bring outdoor screening of the original 3 Star Wars movies, which the organisers have obtained the rights to screen.
